Calculating GPA

Calculating Semester Grades

Grade Enhancement

GPA: Grade Point Average - An average of "quality points" earned.

Unweighted GPA: average of all grades without any bonus, also called state GPA & unweighted GPA. This is the GPA used for graduation purposes. Must be above 2.0 to graduate and be eligible for sports and extracurricular activities.

Weighted GPA: the most common GPA reported and includes bonuses for taking Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), or Dual Enrollment (DE) course.

Please note, starting with the Class of 2027, quality points will be added prior to averaging, bringing us in line with most national standards for GPA calculation.

Quality Points: number value for letter grades, as follows
A=4     B=3     C=2     D=1     F=0
Please see this chart to calculate semester grades based on two quarters plus the midterm/final exam.

Please note that Algebra 1, Geometry, U.S. History & Biology have End-of-Course (EOC) exams.
These exams are weighted at 30% rather than the typical 25%.
Students can “enhance” a grade of D or F in any course by taking the same or a comparable course.
The enhanced course grade must be a C or higher.

For the state GPA required for graduation, calculation shall include all grades that the student attempts, including all D’s and F’s, unless enhanced.
Once enhanced, the grade is not calculated in state (unweighted) GPA.
For class rank, all courses attempted are included in the district (weighted) GPA.
All courses attempted will appear on a student’s transcript regardless of grade enhancement.

Middle School Grade Forgiveness
Students in grades 6-8 who take any high school level course for high school credit and earn a grade of C, D, or F may enhance the grade with a grade of C or higher earned subsequently in the same or comparable course.
